Broome

Broome is the Kimberley's best-known tourist town, famous for Cable Beach, red ochre cliffs and turquoise water. Kimberley Car Hire coordinates one-way hire between Derby and Broome, so you can fly into one town and drive out through the other without doubling back.

Broome sits at the southern end of the Kimberley coast, roughly a day's drive south-west of Derby along the Great Northern Highway. Built up as a pearling town in the 1880s, it's now the region's main tourism hub, known for its beaches, red cliffs and a laid-back mix of Aboriginal, Asian and colonial history you won't find anywhere else in WA.

Things to Do in Broome

  • Cable Beach: 22 kilometres of white sand and turquoise water, best known for its camel rides at sunset.
  • Staircase to the Moon: a natural light show where the rising full moon reflects off the exposed tidal flats of Roebuck Bay, visible on select nights between March and October.
  • Gantheaume Point: red sandstone cliffs above the ocean, with fossilised dinosaur footprints exposed at very low tide.
  • Aboriginal cultural tours: guided walks and tours run by local Yawuru people, covering Country, culture and bush tucker.
  • Pearling heritage: pearl luggers, working pearl showrooms and Sun Pictures, the world's oldest operating outdoor cinema, all trace back to Broome's pearling days.

Plenty of Kimberley Car Hire's customers fly into Broome, drive the Gibb River Road or the Kimberley's back roads, then finish in Derby, or the reverse. We coordinate one-way hire between the two towns, including drop-off arrangements with Broome-based partners, so your trip doesn't have to be a there-and-back loop.

See our one-way hire page for how Derby–Broome one-way hire works, or browse our fleet to find the right vehicle for the drive.
