West Kimberley
Fitzroy Crossing
Fitzroy Crossing sits on the Fitzroy River east of Derby, on the route towards Geikie Gorge and the eastern Kimberley. It's a practical stopover point and fuel stop for longer Kimberley journeys.

Fitzroy Crossing sits on the Fitzroy River, roughly midway between Derby and Halls Creek on the Great Northern Highway. For most travellers it's a practical stop (fuel, supplies and a break) on the way to or from Geikie Gorge (Darngku) and the eastern Kimberley.
Things to Do in Fitzroy Crossing
- Geikie Gorge (Darngku): a short drive north of town, with boat tours through limestone gorge walls run by the local Bunuba community, and walking trails along the riverbank.
- Fitzroy River: the river that gives the town its name, running high and fast in the wet season and pooling in the dry, making it a good rest stop and photo opportunity.
- Fuel and supplies: the last reliable fuel and supply stop for a good stretch in either direction, worth planning around if you're continuing east or west.
If your itinerary extends beyond the western Gibb, Fitzroy Crossing is a sensible waypoint to plan around. Talk to us about vehicle suitability for the route when you book or get in touch; most of our fleet is well suited to this stretch of highway driving, with 4WDs recommended if you're continuing on to unsealed roads beyond it.
