Gibb River Road

The Gibb River Road is the classic Kimberley 4WD adventure: a largely unsealed route linking Derby to Kununurra via some of the region's most spectacular gorge country. A 4WD is required, and our self-drive itineraries are built around it.

Crossing on the Gibb River Road in the Kimberley

Stretching roughly 660 kilometres between Derby and Kununurra, the Gibb River Road is the reason most travellers hire a 4WD in the Kimberley in the first place. It's mostly unsealed, seasonally affected, and leads to some of the best gorge country in Australia.

Because we're based in Derby, right at the western end of the Gibb, we're set up specifically for travellers starting or finishing here. Our 3, 5 and 7-day self-drive itineraries are all built around this stretch of the road, based on genuine local route knowledge rather than a generic packaged tour.

Things to Do Along the Gibb

  • Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek: towering Devonian reef walls and a walk-through limestone tunnel, both within a couple of hours of Derby.
  • Bell Gorge: one of the most photographed spots on the Gibb, with a tiered waterfall and swimming hole in the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges.
  • Galvans Gorge: a short, easy walk from the road to a swimming hole and boab tree, a good stretch stop midway along the route.
  • Manning Gorge: a longer walk to a wide swimming hole and waterfall, popular as an overnight stop with its own campground.
  • Roadside camping and station stays: much of the Gibb is dotted with stations and campgrounds set up for self-drive travellers, worth booking ahead in peak season.

A properly equipped 4WD isn't optional out here. See vehicle access and suitability and driving in the Kimberley before you go, and check our seasonal travel guide for when the road is typically open.
