Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek & Bell Gorge
3 Day Derby Self-Drive
Get your first taste of the legendary Gibb River Road on a three-day journey through some of the Western Kimberley's most spectacular gorge country. Starting from Derby, explore ancient limestone ranges, walk through a natural underground tunnel and spend a day at one of the Kimberley's most impressive waterfalls. This is an ideal introduction to the Gibb for travellers with limited time.
Day 1: Derby to Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge)

Collect your vehicle in Derby and head east towards the start of the Gibb River Road.
If time allows, stop at Mowanjum Aboriginal Art and Culture Centre before leaving the Derby area, then continue towards Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park.
Bandilngan cuts through an ancient Devonian reef system, with towering limestone walls surrounding the Lennard River. Explore the gorge walking trails and keep watch for freshwater crocodiles resting beside the water.
There is no swimming at Windjana Gorge.
Stay: Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) Campground. During the main season, campground bookings are essential.
Day 2: Windjana Gorge to Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) and Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge)

Start early and drive approximately 37 kilometres from Windjana Gorge to Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park.
This is one of the Kimberley's most unusual walks. Follow the creek for approximately 750 metres through the Napier Range, wading through pools and exploring the enormous limestone tunnel.
Bring a torch, suitable footwear and clothes you don't mind getting wet. A 4WD is required for access and conditions vary throughout the season.
After exploring Tunnel Creek, retrace your route towards the Gibb River Road and continue deeper into the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges towards Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge).
Settle in for the night nearby.
Stay: Dulundi (Silent Grove) Campground or nearby accommodation.
Day 3: Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge) to Derby

Wake early and spend the morning exploring Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge).
Follow the approximately 2-kilometre gorge trail to the waterfall and continue down towards the large pool below. Swimming is permitted at Dalmanyi, subject to current conditions.
Afterwards, begin the drive back towards Derby, taking your time through the spectacular Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges.
Return your vehicle in Derby and finish your three-day introduction to the Kimberley.
