Windjana Gorge

Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) cuts through an ancient Devonian reef system, with towering limestone walls along the Lennard River. It's one of the most accessible gorges from Derby and features on every one of our self-drive itineraries.

Windjana Gorge in Windjana Gorge National Park

Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) is usually the first major stop on the way out of Derby, and it's a striking introduction to Kimberley gorge country. The gorge cuts through what was once part of an ancient limestone reef system, and the walls tower above the Lennard River, which runs through much of the year.

Things to Do at Windjana Gorge

  • Walk the gorge trail: a flat, well-marked trail follows the riverbank beneath the limestone walls, suitable for most fitness levels.
  • Spot freshwater crocodiles: it's common to see them resting along the water's edge from the trail; keep your distance and stay away from the water.
  • Read the reef geology: the gorge walls are the exposed remains of a 350-million-year-old Devonian reef system, visible in the layered limestone.
  • Camp overnight: a national park campground sits near the gorge entrance, a popular first-night stop for Gibb River Road travellers.

There's no swimming here, but the gorge is worth the visit for the geology and the walk alone. Windjana Gorge is the first stop on all three of our self-drive itineraries, and the campground here is popular, so book ahead during the main dry-season travel period. See our seasonal travel guide for timing.
